"The End of Music Industry As We Know It" è il titolo di un report della Forrester Research nel quale viene spiegato come il mercato della musica digitale crescerà del 23% ogni anno fino al 2012, raggiungendo i 4,8 miliardi di dollari di vendite annue e andando in questo modo a superare le vendite globali di CD audio, attestate secondo le stime a 3,8 miliardi di dollari.
Forrester inoltre prevede una diminuzione dei servizi che utilizzeranno DRM e un aumento di fatturato dei servizi che offrono abbonamenti di ascolto di musica in streaming on-demand (fino a 460 milioni di dollari a tutto il 2012).
Un'altra previsione interessante è che gli Ad-supported downloads (ovvero i siti che consentono il download di brani musicali con DRM gratuitamente previa visione di una pubblicità) non riusciranno a decollare a causa della costante crescita di siti che offrono gratuitamente l'ascolto di brani in streaming tipo Jango, Last.FM e Imeem.
